Safety notes for three popular gift types
Baby carriers. Health Canada says babies under 4 months, babies born prematurely and babies with breathing problems or a cold are at higher risk of suffocation in slings and carriers, so talk to your health-care provider first. Keep your baby's face visible and their chin off their chest, and move a baby who falls asleep to a crib.
Sound machines. The CPS calls white noise comforting but not essential for sleep. If you use one, keep the volume low, place it well away from the crib, and keep cords out of reach.
Soft toys and blankets. The CPS says loose soft items, including toys, should be kept out of a baby's sleep space. Treat them as awake-time gifts.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good baby gift under $50 in Canada?
A rattle, a sensory tummy-time mat, a silicone suction plate or a toddler sippy cup are practical picks in that range.
Are soft toys safe gifts for babies?
They are fine for supervised awake time. The Canadian Paediatric Society says loose soft items, including toys, should be kept out of a baby's sleep space.
Is a baby carrier a good gift for a newborn?
It can be, but Health Canada says babies under 4 months and premature babies are at higher risk of suffocation in carriers, so parents should talk to their health-care provider and keep the baby's face visible and chin off the chest.
